Primal Scream

Livehouse Dundee

This was a kind of strange day today. I got word late in the day that I was photographing the Primal Scream gig at the Livehouse in Dundee, but as a professional photographer, you always need to be ready and prepared. Batteries not charged, SD cards not formated or ready to go, so it was full steam ahead to get organised.

The band are kicking off their new UK tour and will play their album XTRMNTR in its entirety. This is their album that was previously released 26 years ago.

I’ve photographed in the Livehouse at previous gigs, photographing bands such as The Last Dinner Party, Kneecap, Snow Patrol and the queue was always packed round the corner as fans would be waiting eagerly to get in, but tonight, this was a bit strange when I arrived… their was only a handful of fans waiting to get in.

Vlure was the support for tonight’s gig. I have not heard much about them, but it’s always nice to see scottish talent on the live stage. They are a Glasgow band that I’d describe as a techno, punks band with plenty of energy across their set from start to finish.

VLURE front man, Hamish Hutcheson jumped down into the crowd as he performed the bands second song, “Something Real.” This didn’t go down well with security as this wasn’t planned due to not having enough security in place to cover the pit as I was informed.

The venue was starting to fill up slowly for Primal Screams planned stage time for 9pm. I also noticed that some of the older fans of the band had dug out their washed-out looking Primal Scream t-shirts from way back in the day.

As the band took to the stage bang on time, they kicked the night off with Kill all Hippies, followed by Accelerator and Exterminator.

Gillespie left the stage when Swastika Eye was played, and the fans were left with a colourful visual display of political figure, which went down well with the audience as they stood, taking in the display.

Pills, Blood Money, got a good response from the crowd as the fans belted the lyrics right back at Gilespie.

This was followed by a wee burst of…

And we’ll all go together

To pull wild mountain thyme

All around the blooming heather

Will you go lassie go.

This wee burst went down well with the scottish crowd, and for anyone not sure of its context in the gig…its just a well-known scottish folk song that everyone likes to sing.

By this time, the crowd was lapping up and enjoying seeing Gillespie at sixty-five, with his amazing stage presence along with his rock & roll attitude as he moved around the stage.

The night continued with more tracks and fans’ favourites like Kowalski, Movin On Up, Country Girl, and Rocks.

It was another great night for the Dundee crowd as they made their way out the venue and into the dark September night, but for someone like myself who’s always shouting for bands to come further north, well, I have to say I was a wee bit disappointed that this gig wasn’t a sell-out.
