Caird Hall Dundee
26th April 2025
Support, Linka Moja
The Who frontman and rock legend, Roger Daltrey stops off at the Caird Hall in Dundee tonight as part of his new solo tour Alive and Kicking.
He will perform hits songs from The Who’s back catalogue, plus songs from his solo collection. Also, as part of the new tour there will be an interacting with the audience with a Q&A session, so an interesting night ahead.
The Who last played Dundee Caird Hall back on May 23rd, 1971, to a crowd of 2,500 fans, when tickets for the gig cost £1 for general admission and 75p if you were sitting up in the gallery… how times have changed.
As part of that tour, the fans were used as guinea pigs for the band as the wanted to try out new songs for the new album Who’s Next as well as try out some new technology for the gig.
Support for the night came from indie rock artist Linka Moja who got the fans in the mood for the main event with her tracks, Unravel Me, Blood Orange, Psycho.
Daltrey took to the stage at 8.30 and shouted to the Dundee crowd…. “This is what it’s all about…Live Music, so keep turning up to these gigs as he highlighted that this is all that left in the industry.”
He also informed the fans that “It’s been 40 years since I was last in Dundee.”
Two songs with Let My Love Open the Door and Freedom Ride, Daltrey brought on a stool saying…it’s come to this. He settled himself down on the stool and produced a selections of audience questions.
Daltrey was heckled from a member of the crowd “how many times have you actually hit someone well swinging your microphone.” Daltrey replied “just the once which was deliberately that he could recall. A guy through a coin at him during a Chuck Berry tribute gig and the guy had a “kiss with a microphone.”
A young inspiring guitarist asks about any advice he could give him…Daltrey answered back …. “Just keep playing. The music industry is in such a mess so just keep playing.”
As the questions kept flowing… the crowd didn’t expect one of them to be a marriage proposal from a member of the audience. The crowd let out a roar and up popped a man from his seat followed by his wife to-be as she excepted his proposal and again followed by another roar.
After the interaction with the audience Daltrey got back to entertaining the fans with “Who Are You, Giving It All Away, Substitute.
Daltrey voice was on another level throughout this gig, and I have to say this was one of the best performances I’ve seen at the Caird Hall.
As the night came to an end, he finished off with an encore of Ring of Fire and Days.
He may be 81-year-old, but the voice is still amazing and the interaction with the fans throughout this gig gave them memories they’ll cherish for a long time.
