Livehouse Dundee

Tonight, Snow Patrol returned to the city where it all started out for them back in 1994. Yes, everyone, Dundee.

The band is back to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the album, Eyes Open, which was released back in 2006. The album went on to become one of the top UK albums with hits singles, Chasing Cars, Open Your Eyes, Hands Opened, Shut Your Eyes and You’re All I Have. 

For anyone out their who doesn’t know the importance of the bands connection with Dundee well, here is a wee bit of history about the guys and Dundee. 

It was while at Dundee University Gary Lightbody teamed up with Michael Morrison and Mark McClelland and formed the band on the first day of freshers week and also played their first gig at the student union in Dundee. 

Lightbody came up with a couple of strange names for the band with Shrug and Polarbear, but thankfully, it all worked out with Snow Patrol.

Since those early days the band have went on to world wide success playing in large arenas and festivals around the globe, so to have the band back in Dundee tonight is a massive tribute to the band and the Livehouse venue. 

The band recently performed at the Crystal Palace ground in London, where they had a surprise guest appearance from Kylie Minogue. The band have recently collaborated with Kylie on their new single “These Alarms,” a song about connection. 

Approaching the venue, you could see from the queue that this was going to be an older crowd who would be attending tonight. 

The security was also pleased about that as no mosh pits would be happening, unlike the last visit to the Livehouse when Kneecap played.

Snow Patrol took to the stage at 8.20 to a big roar from the Dundee fans. Lightbody shouted to the crowd that “It’s been a long time, Dundee.” 

The first song of the night was Chocolate, followed by Crack The Shutters and then Run. 

Lightbody had the fans in laughter as he forgot the words to the song. “I even have them written on the floor, and I still forget them,” he said. 

For any of the fans who didn’t know about Lightbody, he reminded them that not only did he start the band in Dundee, but he went to university in the city. 

Other tracks followed Open Your Eyes, Chasing Cars and the night finished off with Just Say Yes.

There were no fancy frills in this gig, no dramatic stage setting, no dramatic lighting, no backdrops on the stage, just good old music for the fans to enjoy. 

It might have only been a short gig from the three members of the band, but what a night reminiscing some classic songs from a band who started out in Dundee but went right to the very top of the charts.
